Students who were massed around a parking lot argument at Bolton High School Friday afternoon scattered when one party pulled a .223 assault rifle from a car trunk and fired into the air.
No one was injured in the fracas.
Shelby County Sheriff’s Officers responded to the scene and got details of the event from witnesses and the victim.
A male student said he fought with 20-year-old Daron Childress a couple of days earlier and that Childress planned payback at the school with help from others. The student said he was assaulted in the student parking lot Friday afternoon as he left for spring break.
Witnesses said that Childress fired several shots into the air during the fight between numerous students in the parking lot.
Officers later found Childress at his mother’s home, and he admitted firing several rounds into the air to scare off the other students. A Memphis Police Department report showed the gun had been stolen from a building in February.
Childress was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon on school grounds.
Carolyn Jackson, the Shelby County School District’s director of safety and security, had no comment. She said district personnel cannot discuss open investigations, and she directed all inquiries to the SCSO.
