On Wednesday, December 5, 2012, twenty-four students competed in the 2012-2013 Annual Spelling Bee. Apex Teacher, Mrs. Jackie Watson, had coordinated this year’s Spelling Bee. Mrs. Watson had encouraged the 4th and 5th grade students to practice in and out of school since only one student would be chosen to represent Altruria in the County-Wide Spelling Bee! Each of the 24 students was an individual winner within their respective classrooms.
Mrs. Kristy Ford, Reading Instructional Supervisor for grades K-5 for Shelby County Schools, was the 2012-2013 Pronouncer. After the students had completed many rounds, 5th grade students Julia Nguyen from Mrs. Tricia Hampton’s Class and Logan McClanahan from Mrs. Robbie Parson’s Class entered the Championship Round. These students worked very hard! Logan McClanahan was declared the winner of the 2012-2013 Spelling Bee with Julia Nguyen as the very capable Runner-Up.
