Arlington’s October crime report: AHS has teacher intimidation, student fondling incidents

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reported the following incidents in Arlington for Sept. 30 and the month of October 2014.

Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a courty of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.


Oct. 1



Chester Street (other larceny/access device)

Arl-SCSO-Oct14-incidents-table2A resident on the 4500 block of Chester Street noticed on Oct. 1 that someone made five fraudulent purchases on her Regions check card the previous day. The charges included a $200 gift card and $13 shipping fee at Kroger.com, $1 for Amazon Prime, $81.98 at 1800Flowers.com, $1.25 at Finger Hut, and $74.65 for a 50-piece wing platter, double cheeseburger and rib tips at Bossman BBQ Pit Stop (1621 Getwell Road). Bossman’s owner said he has surveillance footage of a female picking up the order at 7:45 p.m.

Immediately before the fraudulent purchases, the card holder had made legal purchases at Karina’s Nails (2235 Whitten Road) and Captain D’s (U.S. 64). The victim has since cancelled the Regions card.


Oct. 2


Airline Road (felony vandalism)

A male student at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road) reported on Oct. 2 that a female student had told him the previous day about seeing three scratches on the driver’s side of his vehicle in the school parking lot. He accused her of the vandalism, saying she believes he caused the breakup between the girl and her boyfriend. The female student denied vandalizing the vehicle. (The ex-boyfriend’s car was also vandalized the next day.)


Oct. 3


Dargie Drive/Hayes Road (misdemeanor drugs/narcotics violation)

Deputies found more than they bargained for when they pulled over the driver of a white Toyota Corolla, clocked at 35 mph in a 20-mph zone at Dargie Drive and Hayes Road. It was around 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 3, and they smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming rom the vehicle. The driver directed them to the glove compartment, where deputies found 0.3 grams of marijuana and a glass pipe. They also found a Dr. Pepper can containing six white pills in the driver’s side door panel and an opened pack of cigars under the driver’s seat.

Airline Road (felony vandalism)

A car owner reported his suspicions on Oct. 3 that his ex-girlfriend had keyed his vehicle in the Arlington High School parking lot (5475 Airline Road) after a nasty breakup. A witness reported that the ex-girlfriend had talked about possibly keying the vehicle. The scratches were not on his car when he parked at the school that morning, he said. He also reported that she had his steering wheel cover and had parked across the lane from him. There were no video cameras in the parking lot nor any witnesses to the vandalism. (A friend of the victim also had his vehicle keyed in the school parking lot, and he suspected the ex-girlfriend of damaging his vehicle too.)

Wagon Cove (theft from motor vehicle)

A man on the 11800 block of Wagon Cove reported that someone stole change and a weapon from his unlocked Chevrolet Silverado, parked in his driveway between 12:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Nov. 3. The missing gun is a blue chrome and black Sig Sauer .380 handgun. The gun’s serial number has been placed in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. There was no workable crime scene or suspect.


Oct. 4


Airline Road (misdemeanor vandalism)

A woman on the 4700 block of Airline Road reported that her son and daughter argued about the daughter’s car, which he got angry and damaged. The brother was working on his sister’s car, and he became irate and yelled at her when she asked why he needed a certain part. She said he went inside the house, slamming doors and yelling. When the mother told him to leave, he removed the license plate and threw it at the rear passenger door, denting it. He left before officers arrived. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. Oct. 4.


Oct. 7


Dr. Logan Circle (burglary/domestic violence)

A woman and her boyfriend argued late on Oct. 7 over how she texted other men on her cell phone. They were at her mother’s house on the 5700 block of Dr. Logan Circle when he got angry, punched a hole in an interior wall and walked outside.

She locked the front door because she was afraid the fight would get more physical. He hit the door with his shoulder and damaged the door, trying to get back inside, but failed to enter. Instead, he went around back and climbed in through an unlocked window.

As he entered, she left through the rear door and was at a neighbor’s house when officers responded.

A medical team treated the man’s hand on scene, and he was transported to 201 Poplar on aggravated burglary charges.


Oct. 11


Green Lee Street (simple assault)

Officers detained a person on the 6200 block of Green Lee Street early on Oct. 11 for a simple assault and misdemeanor vandalism that didn’t occur in the officer’s presence. The officer transported the extremely intoxicated suspect to 591 Court Street for detoxification.


Oct. 13


Airline Road (intimidation)

Arlington High School assistant principal Reginald Gipson reported a case of intimidation at the school (5475 Airline Road) on Oct. 13. He said other students were harassing a female student because she allegedly had a part in getting another female student kicked out of the school’s cheer dancing team.

He met with all the involved youths on Oct. 2, and they agreed to stop the harassment and resolve the matter. However, the girl who got kicked off the team exchanged several Instagram messages with the victim between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Oct. 13, threatening a fight, according to the victim’s mother, who is an AHS teacher.

The victim’s mother said she doesn’t want anyone threatening her daughter or disrupting her learning environment, and she said she wanted to press charges.


Oct. 18


U.S. 70 (simple assault)

Someone sprayed the night manager at McDonald’s (11590 U.S. 70) with a fire extinguisher around 12:16 a.m. on Oct. 18.

The victim came to the window to hand over a 10-piece chicken nugget dinner, and he saw a white male driver around 16-20 years old with red hair, along with a female passenger, in a maroon car. The male sprayed him in the face with a fire extinguisher. His glasses protected the victim’s eyes, but he had to be treated for the spray getting into his nose and mouth.

A review of the store’s video footage yielded the car’s tag number, registered to a woman on the 4900 block of Snickers Drive in Arlington. The resident’s daughter had use of the car at that time, and she identified her boyfriend as the driver who surprised her by assaulting the McDonald’s employee.

Another store employee said a copy of the video would be available within a couple of days, and the victim said he wanted to prosecute.

Douglass Street (theft of vehicle parts/accessories)

A man reported around 3:30 p.m. Oct. 18 that someone punched the lock, stole a Pioneer radio and other equipment, and pulled out the dash on his Ford F250 while it was parked in the field behind Arlington Middle School (11825 Douglass St.).

Douglass Street (theft from motor vehicle)

A mother and daughter said someone broke into their 2006 Chrysler Town & Country minivan while it was parked in the Arlington Elementary School Parking lot during the Arlington BBQ Festival.

They parked around 11:30 a.m. and returned around 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 18 to find the driver’s side door forced open and the daughter’s purple backpack stolen. The backpack contained a Tennessee ID, Social Security card and a First South bank card. No latent fingerprints were discovered at the scene.

Douglass Street (theft from motor vehicle)

A man said someone broken into his 2010 Ford F250 while he was parked at Arlington Elementary School during the Arlington BBQ Festival. He returned to his vehicle around 3:30 p.m. Oct. 18 to find his driver’s side door had been forced open and his vehicle ransacked.

Items stolen included a Springfield Armory XDs9 9mm compact semi-auto pistol and $50 cash from his center console. The responding officer lifted several partial fingerprints from the passenger side door exterior, and the stolen pistol’s serial number was entered into the NCIC database.


Oct. 21


Airline Road (intimidation)

An Arlington High School teacher filed an intimidation report against an irate student who threatened him at the school (5475 Airline Road) on Oct. 21.

The teacher said a female student got angry when he said she didn’t turn in an assignment. She cursed and made threats to hit him several times in front of other student witnesses.

He called for an assistant principal because he felt threatened for himself and the other students. The student admitted to being angry but said she couldn’t remember her words. She was suspended for 180 school days.


Oct. 22


Lamb Road (intimidation)

Around 3:35 p.m. Oct. 22, an officer responded to an intimidation report on the 5400 block of Lamb Road. The police report did not release any other details publicly.

Airline Road (forcible fondling)

A male student at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road) admitted putting his hand inside the back of a female student’s pants during a wellness class, but he said he never touched her physically. The victim said she told the boy it was not right and to stop.

The assistant principal contacted both students’ mothers and suspended the boy for one day. There are no security cameras where the incident happened.


Oct. 25


Armistead Street (intimidation)

A couple on the 6000 block of Armistead Street reported an alarming escalation of intimidation from a woman who the husband had dated in high school a decade previously. Within the past three years, she tried contacting the married man by text and phone calls multiple times until he changed his cell phone number, cutting off contact for the past two years.

Meanwhile, friends told the man that his former girlfriend was posting rap videos online with progressively more disturbing contents. On Oct. 25, a new video at an Arlington landmark included multiple pictures of the man’s neighbors’ mailboxes, each captioned, “Free to Murder with a Shotgun.”

he man said he fears for his safety his wife’s safety, especially if she happens to be working in the yard and the suspect drives by and recognizes her. A further investigation brought to the officers’ attention the fact that the former girlfriend was emergency committed for treatment of her bipolar disorder and her belief that she was being possessed by demons.


Oct. 26


Airline Road (threatening phone call)

A business manager on the 4900 block of Airline Road said an employee got upset during a job performance discussion and left the workplace the morning of Oct. 26. The manager said he and several females then called from his cell phone three times to make threats, including, “I’m going to kill you and shoot you when you walk out the building.”

Officers were not able to contact the suspect. They advised the victim what steps to take if she wants to prosecute.


Oct. 27


Airline Road (drug equipment violation)

An officer stopped a car speeding southbound on Airline Road, going 43 mph in a 30-mph zone around 12:33 a.m. Oct. 27. The driver had a license that was suspended in May for failure to pay child support, and he didn’t have proof of car insurance with him.

The car’s owner was on scene, and she consented to a vehicle search. Officers found a Beretta .22 LR pistol loaded with six rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber under the front passenger’s seat, along with two glass pipes containing a white residue. The driver, who had bloodshot and watery eyes and was a little unsteady on his feet, said the weapon and pipes were his and that he had smoked some ice/meth earlier that day.

The man performed fair on a standard field sobriety test. A Whiskey Unit was called to the scene to perform another standard field sobriety text, and the man refused. An officer transported the driver to the fugitive office for a blood draw.


Oct. 29


Anderson Bend Cove (identity theft)

A woman on the 11100 block of Anderson Bend Cove learned that her identity had been stolen when an AT&T U-Verse representative called her on Oct. 23 about a $1,500 past-due balance on her account. The victim said she didn’t open that account, which has been active since June 20 with her Social Security Number and another person’s name on the paperwork.

The victim said she has not had any personal identity documents stolen and she doesn’t know how the suspect obtained her Social Security Number. She reported the identity theft on Oct. 29.


Oct. 30


Woodson Street (intimidation/domestic violence)

A woman on the 6000 block of Woodson Street reported on Oct. 30 that a man has sent her numerous calls, texts and Facebook messages. Based on his past behavior and a Sept. 25 domestic violence call, she feared he would do her bodily harm.

The man had previously turned himself in on Oct. 22 because of a warrant related to the Sept. 25 incident; at that time, he was told to have no contact with the victim as a condition of his bond.

He has a lengthy history of intimidation and domestic violence cases.
