Going door-to-door: People on both sides of the $50 million bond issuance to pay for constructing Lakeland Prep volunteered their free time to canvass neighborhoods this weekend to drum up support. (1) Bond opposition: Eric McKenzie, holding a “Vote No Bond” sign, is one of the Lakeland residents opposed to the bond costs for a town of about 12,400 people. (2) Bond support: Gathering for a quick meal before they hit the neighborhoods, some Lakelanders who support municipal bonds as a way to expand school district facilities included Keith Acton and son, Lakeland mayor Wyatt Bunker, school board chair Kevin Floyd, and Josh Roman, who is heading up the “Vote Yes” campaign. When and where Lakelanders can vote on school construction bond
Lakeland’s voters will hit the polls in a special vote on April 16 to decide a key funding question for their new school district’s expansion plans.
That is the date of the city’s referendum to decide whether the city mayor and board can issue $50 million in general obligation bonds to fund construction of Lakeland Prep, a combined middle and high school facility. Supporters and voters are equally keen to get voters to the polls.
Early voting about the bond issuance will be available 8 a.m.-6 p.m. March 27-April 11 at Lakeland Elementary School. There will be no early voting on Good Friday (April 3). The Referendum Day for regular voting will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. April 16 at Lakeland residents’ regular polling locations.
