At the Nov. 20 special-called work session, the Arlington Community Schools (ACS) board looked at a capital improvements funding agreement with Shelby County Schools. Funds would be used within 24 months of the agreement at:
- Arlington Elementary School for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) replacement ($300,000), cafeteria/ kitchen re-roofing ($40,000) and HVAC controls ($88,000)
- Arlington High School for painting ($342,000) and gym re-roofing ($80,000)
Before the ACS district was created, the county district formed its capital improvement projects (CIP) budget, including line items for this work in Arlington. So in a one-time only process, the funds must flow through the country district’s budget to benefit the new school district in Arlington.
At press time this week, the board had not yet held its Nov. 25 business meeting to vote on this agreement and other measures. (Work sessions like the Nov. 20 meeting differ from business meetings in that the board can discuss but not take official action at work sessions.)
Other area municipal school districts have been routinely approving similar agreements with Shelby County Schools at recent meetings.
The board also reviewed amendments to the district’s 65-page budget for this school year. Miracle Meeks, ACS chief financial officer, said the amendments include $62,460 from the Shelby County Commission toward construction of a new field house at Arlington High School and a booster club contribution of $60,000 for the same project.

The budget that was approved May 27 and updated June 10 is online. To review capital improvement budget details and more, go online to acsk-12.org/agenda-minutes and select “Supporting Documents” to read documents prepared for the school board’s Nov. 20 special-called work session.
Other business
In other business, the board also:
- Reviewed three versions of the district’s mission statement, vision, beliefs and goals.
All three versions are available online at http://www.acsk-12.org/agenda-minutes (select “Supporting Documents” for the Nov. 20 meeting). - Looked at the 45 questions used on the “General Standards Superintendent Pre-Assessment Performance Evaluation” form. The questions will be used to evaluate ACS superintendent Tammy Mason on her job performance in the following critical areas: Board relations, community relations, staff and personnel relationships, education leadership, business and finance, and strategic planning skills.
