Jackson Street (theft from building/access device): A victim on the 6100 block of Jackson Street reported on Aug. 2 that someone had stolen eight business checks from his home office between June 10 and that day, and three had been used. He discovered on June 23 that one had been cashed for $365 at Ace Cash Express on Winchester. The second one was later cashed at Check into CASHTN for $360. A female suspect tried and failed to cash the third one for $360 at the Summer Avenue BP gas station in Memphis on July 29. When the clerk called the victim to verify the use of the check, he said the woman ran out alongside an unknown heavy-set white man who appeared to be with her. The suspect left her Tennessee identification behind, and the business had working security cameras. There were no other known witnesses or suspect information, and the victim said he filed a report with his bank.

  • U.S. 70 (aggravated assault): An employee at McDonald’s (11660 U.S. 70) reported that an angry customer pulled a handgun on him at the drive-thru window between 2 a.m. and 3 p.m. Aug. 3. The victim said a gray GMC pulled up with three passengers (two white men and one white woman). They yelled that part of their order was missing and threatened to fight him. The male passenger pointed a black semi-automatic handgun (possibly a 9mm) at the employee, and then the trio drove away. The victim captured their license plate. Officers followed up on the address linked to that plate number on the 12200 block of Longhorn Drive in Arlington, and their investigation led them to the name of one of the occupants (possibly the driver) of the GMC.

Aug. 10

  • Mary Alice Drive (misdemeanor vandalism): Someone egged a property on the 12200 block of Mary Alice drive between 10 p.m. Aug. 9 and around 8 a.m. Aug. 10. The victim said someone threw eggs on the house’s roof, two vehicles parked in the driveway and the driveway itself. He washed off most of the residue before the officer arrived. He said he didn’t know who vandalized his property but that some neighbors didn’t like him because of an issue with a bus stop. He also was not sure if there was any damage to the house or vehicles.

Aug. 11

  • Milton Ridge Drive (residential burglary): A resident on the 5100 block of Milton Ridge Drive reported a home burglary between his bedtime around 10:15 p.m. Aug. 10 and when he woke briefly around 2:50 a.m. Aug. 11. He noticed that his air conditioning unit was still running, so he investigated and found his garage door and garage window were open. Someone had pried the screen off the unlocked window to enter the garage and then the house. The victim had placed his wallet on a table in the front hallway, and he saw it was missing. He called credit card companies to cancel cards and found that someone had already used his Citibank MasterCard to buy $41.47 of fuel at 2:27 a.m. that morning at the Tiger Mart Exxon on Canada Road/I-40 in Lakeland. No fingerprints were recovered at the scene. The victim got a receipt of the transaction from the Tiger Mart’s clerk, and the store has security video.

  • Southfork Drive (forcible sodomy): An officer responded to the 12200 block of Southfork Drive at 9:16 a.m. Aug. 11 regarding a report of forcible sodomy. No other details are publicly available.

Aug. 12

  • Airline Road (other theft/non-specific): An employee watching a business security monitor reported a theft in progress just before 1 a.m. on Aug. 12 on the 5700 block of Airline Road. The dispatcher advised the responding officers that two suspects were taking items from a storage bin and placing them by the fence at the rear of the business. A deputy went to the front of the building while a sergeant went to the rear. One suspect tried to jump the fence, and the deputy intercepted him at the top, ordering him down at shotgun point and arresting him without incident. The sergeant jumped the rear fence and chased down the second suspect, taking him into custody at gun point without incident.
    .
Officers reported that the suspects apparently pried off some rear fence boards to get into the lot. The General Investigations Bureau (GIB) of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office seized one suspect’s red Toyota T100, parked south of the business behind a row of school buses. Items stolen included five radiators, three condensers, one compressor, one drive shaft, two spindles and three water pumps ($4,300 total). The business owner arrived and identified the stolen property, and officers released it to his custody at the scene. Officers transported the two suspects to GIB, interviewed them and booked them into the jail.
    .
  • Brown Street (other larceny/access device): A woman on the 11800 block of Brown Street reported on Aug. 12 that that a white man who had lived with her for one month had stolen her Trustmark bank card out of her purse on Aug. 2 and used it to buy a Megabus ticket, a Greyhound bus ticket, access to a porn site, a gift card, an AT&T phone card, a SIM card, a TracFone (prepaid cellular phone), two Redbox movies and one iTunes soundtrack (total $310).
  • Airline Road (theft of other trailer): Someone stole a trailer filled with tools ($4,000) from the 4500 block of Airline Road between 7 p.m. Aug. 11 and 7 a.m. Aug. 12. The 2008 dual-axle 16-foot enclosed utility work trailer was parked at the bottom of the victim’s driveway on the edge of his property. Although the owner did not know the trailer’s vehicle identification number (VIN), he said he could recognize the trailer by its distinctive damage marks. Tools in the trailer included a table saw, miter saw, tile saw, shop vacuums and other specialty tools for his flooring business. He could not provide a full list of the tools or their serial numbers.

  • Memphis Arlington Road (misdemeanor drugs/narcotics violation): An officer patrolling the Arlington Sports Complex (11307 Memphis Arlington Road) around 11:30 p.m. Aug. 18 noticed two white men in a silver Volkswagen Golf that exuded the strong odor of marijuana. The suspects said there was nothing illegal in the vehicle, and the car’s owner consented to a search. The deputy searched a yellow backpack in the rear seat and found a small pill bottle containing 4.2 grams of marijuana and a brown cloth bag containing a glass pipe covered in marijuana residue. The passenger confessed to owning the backpack and its contents and said he and the car owner had met to smoke after work. The deputy issued him a misdemeanor citation for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • Logan Cove (simple assault/domestic violence): A family argument over a pair of socks escalated into a fight on the 5700 block of Logan Cove around 9:25 a.m. Aug. 19. The mother said she wouldn’t let her son wear his brother’s socks, and the son got angry. He demanded that she repay $40 he’d given her. When she refused, he threw a small white chair at his mother, punched out the home’s front window and fled. She was uninjured and estimated the property damages at $100. (See an Aug. 25 report further down in this listing for an incident within the same household.)

Items stolen included a power blower ($500), a grass trimmer ($200), and two five-gallon gas cans filled with $30 of gasoline. The lawn equipment’s serial numbers were entered into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

  • Chester Road/Douglas Road (simple assault): Around 2:25 p.m. Aug. 21, two older teens brawled about money while surrounded by a group of children on the playground at Chester and Douglass roads. The 18-year-old said he was meeting his 17-year-old best friend at the parking lot to ask for a delay in repaying a $20 loan. The older teen said he admitted not having the money, his friend punched him in the face, and they exchanged blows. A witness backed up his story. The 18-year-old had a bloody nose but refused medical treatment for what appeared to be minor injuries. Most witnesses left before deputies arrived, and the officers weren’t able to contact the second suspect. The victim said he didn’t want to prosecute his friend, but deputies documented the fight in case there are more incidents.
  • Memphis Arlington Road (counterfeiting/forgery): A victim on the 11600 block of Memphis Arlington Road reported on Aug. 21 that someone had written two checks drawing on her account at the Shelby County Credit Union: One for $392.08 on Aug. 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Buford, Ga., and another for $653.66 at an unknown Pep Boys location on Aug. 16.

Aug. 22

  • Airline Road (simple assault): A mother pressed charges against a female Arlington High School student after a bad driving incident on Aug. 19, multiple encounters in the following days, and then being struck in the face on Aug. 22. The victim said it began when she was teaching her 15-year-old son how to drive around 5:15 p.m. Aug. 19. They were northbound on Airline Road when a white Tahoe truck passed in front of their vehicle, nearly causing a crash where Airline and Hayes roads merge near the beginning of some road construction.
    .
The mother saw the truck park at ATC Fitness and noticed it was still there when she returned later. She went into the business to inquire but couldn’t find anyone who knew the driver. The mother waited by the truck to speak to the driver, who turned out to be a 16-year-old female. The mother said the teen was disrespectful, so the adult said she responded by getting loud, using profanity and calling the teen’s father. The mother also said the teen was sarcastic, made faces and flipped her off as she left. On Aug. 20, the teen driver parked in front of the mom and son in the school parking lot and made sarcastic faces, so the mother responded in the same manner and left. On Aug. 21, the mother decided to park further away at the school. Then on Aug. 22, the victim said the teen suspect and her parents came to her in the parking lot, and the victim said she did not want to deal with the matter there. The victim said that’s when the teen struck her twice in the face.
    .
The responding officer observed that the victim had a bruised right cheekbone and redness on the left cheekbone. The victim first said she wanted to press charges, then advised that she wanted the school to handle the matter. A friend of the victim called the Arlington Community Schools superintendent later in the day about the matter, and then the victim returned to the school and said she wanted to prosecute the matter after all. (The following report is related to this case.)
  • Airline Road (intimidation): The father and mother of a female teenager said they went to Arlington High School before school on Aug. 22 to find out why an adult woman was having trouble with their daughter. The dad said when his daughter got out of her car at school, the adult woman approached. Then the teen’s mother and father emerged from the vehicle, and the father said the adult woman began yelling and cursing at him.
    .
The father said he wanted to press charges against the woman for harassing and intimidating his daughter. He also said he does not condone his daughter’s actions and will deal with her discipline privately. He advised that he tried several times to call the adult woman, but she would not answer her phone. The teen girl was suspended from school for three days. (The preceding report is related to this case.)

Aug. 24

  • Milton Ridge Drive (residential burglary): The friend of a homeowner on the 5400 block of Milton Ridge Drive reported on Aug. 24 that the home had been burglarized. The friend said he and family members were at the house from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Aug. 23, cleaning the house for the owner, who was in the hospital. The friend noticed that the house looked different when he returned at 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 24, and the back door was unlocked.
    .
The friend listed several missing items, and officers advised him to have the homeowner complete a complete list when he returns from the hospital. Among the items stolen were a 52-inch black flat-screen TV ($1,000) and a black-and-yellow DeWalt tool set ($300).
    .
The responding officer saw no sign of forced entry, but the friend said all windows and doors were locked when he left on Aug. 23.
    .
The friend said he was reporting the incident at the request of his hospitalized friend, and both believe the homeowner’s son burglarized the house. The friend said the son was living with his father until he was kicked out about two months ago, and he might still have a key. The friend said his mother talked to the victim’s son on Aug. 23 regarding his property being on the curb if he wanted to pick it up, and she spoke with him the next day when he was at the house looking for his belongings. There was no other known suspect information or known witnesses.

Aug. 25

  • Gulf Stream Road (simple assault): An officer responded at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25 to a simple assault report on the 11200 block of Gulf Stream Road. The victim said he was fueling a company truck when an agitated co-worker ran up. The co-worker swore at him, told him to move, claimed the victim almost hit his truck, and hit the victim in the face. The responding officer reported there were no visible signs of injury. The victim said he didn’t hit back because another co-worker wanted to help the attacker, who left in an unknown direction.
  • Logan Cove (simple assault/domestic violence): A brother and sister argument over a phone charger on escalated into a physical attack on the 5700 block of Logan Cove on Aug. 25. The victim said her brother punched her in the head and swung a sauce pan at her, hitting her left hand. The Shelby County Fire Department and American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance service made the scene first as the original call was for an ambulance. When they learned of the fight, they called the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. The mother refused medical treatment for the daughter, who had no visible injuries but was crying about hand pain. The brother left the scene before officers arrived. (See an Aug. 19 report higher in this listing for an incident within the same household.)

Aug. 26

  • Black Sheep Drive (felony vandalism): A woman on the 11100 block of Black Sheep Drive said she heard a loud banging around 20 minutes before midnight on Aug. 25 but just thought a few boxes had fallen in her spare bedroom. Then her brother returned home around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 26 and found the garage door to be damaged or destroyed ($1,000). It appeared that it had been kicked several times. The victim said she did not see anyone nearby at the time of the damage.

Aug. 29

  • Lamb Road (theft from building): An Arlington Middle School student confessed on Aug. 29 to stealing money from the Parent-Teacher-Student Association boxes outside two teachers’ rooms. The school reported $100 missing on Aug. 25 and $25 on Aug. 29. A school security camera showed him stealing the $25, and the money was recovered from his front left pocket. He admitted to stealing $90 on Aug. 25 as well. He said he spent the money at the school fair and on snacks in the lunchroom. He received three days of out-of-school suspension (OSS) and a juvenile summons for theft of property under $500.
  • Misty Trail Lane (simple assault/domestic violence): A woman on the 12100 block of Misty Trail Lane reported that her ex-boyfriend broke her cell phone, attacked her and her sister, harassed her at work and stole the phone Aug. 29. The incident began with the victim and her ex-boyfriend arguing outside her home over a civil issue regarding the man’s vehicle. He asked to see her iPhone to prove she was in a relationship with another man. She refused, and she said he then went into her house without permission, removed the phone from her purse and threw it to the ground, cracking the screen. She said he pushed her against the wall when she told him to leave, and she asked her sister to call the police. Then the man twisted her sister’s wrist to prevent her from dialing 911, the victim said.
    .
The sister said he grabbed her shirt, pushed her against the wall too, took the house phone away from her and removed its battery. The original victim walked outside to a neighbor’s house to ask them to call 911, but the man followed and said he would return her phone. The victim said when she reached out, he grabbed her arm and pulled her back inside the house.
    .
The first victim and the man have a daughter together; she was in the room during the alterations, but her father didn’t have any physical contact with her. He left before police arrived.
    .
Both victims refused medical treatment, and the responding officer didn’t see physical marks or bruises on either woman but did see damage to the cell phone.
    .
While the responding officer was still on the scene, the original victim left to report to work at the Shell gas station at 5055 Airline Road and soon reported that the suspect had come to her workplace. The responding officer went to the store. The victim said she didn’t notice her ex-boyfriend at first because he had changed clothes. When they made eye contact, he complained that she wasn’t talking to him. She told him she would not sell him anything, so he walked out to a white Ford Taurus and left the parking lot. She said he then returned and stole her damaged cell phone from behind the counter in plain view of the store’s surveillance camera. The officer couldn’t view the footage immediately because only store management has access to the system. While the officer was still at the store, the suspect came back and returned the woman’s cell phone. The officer detained him without incident. He was transported to jail on simple assault/domestic violence charges.

Aug. 30

  • Ragland Cove (non-residential burglary): A resident on the 6100 block of S.
