Senior citizens get a special bonus each year from the city of Lakeland at the August ice cream social and forum: Help in protecting their homes from fire.

A representative of the Shelby County Fire Department will conduct a smoke detector check and free battery replacement at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the event, or seniors may sign up in advance by calling Smyrna Collins, community services representative for Lakeland, at (901) 867-5409 or emailing her at scollins@lakelandtn.org. The goal of this program is to provide proper detectors or check and replace batteries in their homes, if needed. This program is made possible by an annual grant.
