Area school superintendents were pleased that Monday progressed smoothly with only a few bumps in the road for the new school districts.
“We had a successful first day of school,” said Bartlett City Schools superintendent David Stephens said. “We had the expected bumps in the road — late buses. We will work on smoothing those things out and are excited about the school year.”
Tammy Mason, superintendent for Arlington Community Schools, also said the first day was a great experience. “We were very pleased with our first day of school of our new district. Our goal has always been to start the year off as any other year, and we achieved that goal today.”
She added, “The only sense of confusion came in regards to aligned terminology between Durham and our transportation system. However, the principals figured this out, and although some students got home later than scheduled, all made it home!”
Dr. Ted Horrell, superintendent of the Lakeland School System, said, “I was incredibly proud to see the teachers, administrators and staff at LES finally get a chance to teach students in their new system. Every school day has challenges, but you would be hard pressed to have found any significant glitches today. As far as first days of school go, it was the smoothest I’ve ever seen thanks to the hard work and professionalism of the school-based staff.”
