High winds associated with an early evening thunderstorm on Monday, July 14, knocked down trees and utility lines in Shelby County. More than 30,000 people were left without power.
In Bartlett, police directed people away from downed tree limbs and guided motorists through several intersections where traffic lights were out.

In southeast Shelby County, a tree fell onto a home in the 8300 block of Burning Tree Lane. People inside the house were not hurt.
Near Orange Mound in Memphis, a tree blocked the intersection of Carrington near Haynes.
Shortly after the storm moved into the area about 4:30 p.m., the Shelby County Office of Preparedness activated the Emergency Operations Center where emergency services coordinators tracked damage reports. The National Weather Service reported winds reached 50 miles per hour during the height of the storm.
