The Bartlett Police Department reported the following incidents for July 1-6. (Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of more detailed BPD reports.)
July 1
- U.S. 70 (vandalism): Responded around 2:55 p.m. on July 1 to a complainant at Bartlett Police Headquarters (3730 Appling Road) regarding vandalism. The victim said about two months ago, he discovered that his Polo cologne ($70) had been stolen from his truck while he was out of town. He said he worked on the 6800 block of U.S. 70, and he had left the vehicle in a lot there behind a locked gate.
He said he also discovered that his lug nut key, four-wheeler key, and a camouflage “Red Head” hat were also missing from his truck. - U.S. 64 (theft): Responded at 4:40 p.m. on July 1 to a complainant at Bartlett Police HQ regarding a theft at Malco Stage Cinema (7930 U.S. 64).
The man said someone stole his daughter’s iPhone 4s sometime between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. that day at the theater. He said it disappeared after she placed it on the concessions counter and turned away briefly. - Shelby (embezzlement): Responded at 5:07 p.m. on July 1 to Shelby regarding an embezzlement complaint. The business owner identified a previous employee as a suspect who embezzled funds, using company assets under a fraudulent company name he established during May. He was terminated on June 30.
The suspect was a foreman who had access to company assets and frequently used company credit cards, equipment and personnel to fulfill contractual obligations.
When he was fired, he still had the following company property: two Echo Blowers ($700), one used and one new gas powered hedge trimmer ($400), and various tools and supplies ($2,000).
The estimated total loss to the company was $34,000, and the total loss from work orders was $11,800.
July 2
- North Stage Plaza (unauthorized use of vehicle): Responded at 3:08 p.m. on July 2 regarding an unauthorized use of vehicle complaint at North Stage Plaza.The complainant/manager said an ex-employee had not returned the company’s Ford Expedition or duct cleaning equipment ($3,000). The suspect was terminated on May 28 while in Oklahoma City, Okla., while in possession of the vehicle and equipment, doing work for the company.
The suspect reportedly left the vehicle and equipment in Dallas but said he would retrieve it.
July 4
- U.S. 70 (property damage): Responded around 6:30 p.m. on July 4 to a location on U.S. 70 regarding a property damage report.
The complainant said someone drove through his hay field on the preceding night, causing damage that could harm his hay harvest.
July 5
- Stage Road (vandalism): Responded around 6:54 a.m. on July 5 to the 5200 block of Stage Road regarding a vandalism complainant.
The victim said someone shot her car’s windshield ($400) while it was parked in her driveway overnight. She went to bed around 10 p.m. on July 4 and discovered the damage around 3:30 a.m. on July 5.Officers found a bullet of unknown caliber lying in the vehicle’s center console. Its origin is unknown. - Stage Road (stolen license plate): Responded around 8:32 p.m. July 5 to El Patron (5811 Stage Road) regarding a complaint of a license plate stolen from a 2007 BMW.
- Broadway (burglary complaint): Responded around 11:15 a.m. on July 5 to Broadway regarding a burglary complaint.
The complainant said someone called him around 10:35 that morning to advise that his parents’ home might have been burglarized, as the back door’s glass had been shattered.
The victim was not present on the scene, and officers were not able to determine what was stolen. The case is under investigation. - Bristol Oaks Lane (burglary in progress): Responded around 10:14 p.m. on July 5 to Bristol Oaks Lane regarding a possible burglary in progress. Dispatch said the victim heard someone kick open her front door, and she hid in the bathroom.
The responding officers found the front door open, with a footprint on it. The cleared the residence and found the victim.
She said she had just got out of the shower and walked into the living room when she heard the loud noise that sounded like someone had kicked in the door.
She yelled out “Police!” and ran to the bathroom to call 911.
The victim did not know if the suspect made it into the house or whether anything was missing.
