Arlington fire chief David Franks reported at the June 2 city board meeting that his department handled 71 calls during May, bringing the total to 400 for the year through May 31. He broke down the 71 calls into these categories:

  • 44, emergency medical services (EMS)
  • 18, fire
  • 9, motor vehicle accidents

More actions

Also in May, the Arlington Fire Department:

  • Gave mutual aid, 13 times
  • Received mutual aid, 3 times
  • Made 17 calls south of I-40
  • Was not available for two calls in Arlington due to limited manpower
  • Provided four blood pressure checks
  • Performed seven fire inspections
  • Checked 13 smoke detectors
  • Installed five smoke detectors

Franks commented that one of the smoke detectors the department installed in February 2013 alerted the family to a house fire on May 19.

Mutual aid refers to the department’s practice of automatically supporting or receiving support from the Shelby County Fire Department, as well as doing the same for any neighboring department upon request.

Two fire department personnel also completed structural collapse technicians’ school, and four completed the swift water rescue technicians’ school.

The department provides fire and emergency services to more than 12,000 citizens in the town’s 23.8 square miles.
