The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reported the following incidents in the Arlington area for April 2014.
ARLINGTON AREA, EXCLUDING HIGH SCHOOL
April 1
Simple assault/domestic violence (DV): Responded at 5 p.m. on April 1 to a report of simple assault/DV on the 11600 block of U.S. 70. The victim said the following occurred while she, her boyfriend, and their child were in the car: Her boyfriend was intoxicated and wanted to pick a fight with his boss, so she refused to drive him there. He yelled, punched her arm and grabbed the gearshift, trying to throw the vehicle into “park” while she was driving. Then he pulled the keys out of the ignition, threw them into a field and punched the windshield, damaging the top right corner.
When two deputies arrived, one handcuffed the boyfriend and was kicked in his shin and knee when trying to escort him to a deputies’ cars. The boyfriend also hit the car but didn’t damage it. Both deputies restrained the boyfriend on the ground and patted him down before placing him in the vehicle. Additional deputies arrived on the scene to assist. The boyfriend, meanwhile, was verbally abusive toward officers throughout the process, and officers said he smelled strongly of alcohol.
The deputies learned that the boyfriend was on probation from Fayette County on narcotics charges. The victim signed a “hold harmless” form and refused to be transported to another location. Deputies drove the boyfriend to the Shelby County Jail.
Intimidation: Responded around 8:13 p.m. on April 1 to a reported intimidation incident on the 5900 block of Arlington Oaks Cove. The victim said he was in his front yard about 7:55 p.m. when a neighbor yelled at him and threatened violence about excessive pool water draining onto the neighbor’s property. The victim said he wanted to report the threat in case the suspect ever assaulted him. Officers spoke with the angry neighbor, who said he and the victim argued but he never threatened the other man.
April 5
Simple assault/DV: Responded at 9:08 a.m. on April 5 to a simple assault/DV report on the 5700 block of Logan Cove. Victim 1 had a minor scratch on her arm, and Victim 2 had a split lip. Victim 1 said she’s been on poor terms with her cousin for two years, and he walked in without knocking, responded abruptly to her reprimand, and attacked her when she brushed past him to enter the kitchen. Victim 1 said the cousin punched her in the face and stomped her when she fell. Victim 2 tried to separate them, and the cousin punched her in the mouth too. The cousin then fled in an unknown direction in a dark blue Chevy Impala. Victim 1 said she fears her cousin will try to kill her.
April 7
Theft from motor vehicle: Responded at 4:03 p.m. April 7 to a reported theft from a motor vehicle on the 11500 block of Ryewood Cove. The victim reported that his Gamo pellet gun was stolen from the backseat of his unlocked Nissan Frontier, which was parked in his driveway between 10 p.m. April 5 and 10 a.m. April 6. The victim could not provide the gun’s serial number or any suspect information.
April 8
Other theft/non-specific: Responded at 12:10 p.m. on April 8 to a report of other theft/non-specific on the 11700 block of U.S. 70. The victim said a white man stole the washer and dryer from his home’s side carport. The suspect loaded both appliances into the bed of his truck over the victim’s protests and drove away. The victim said the truck was white, didn’t have a tag and might have been an F-150. The victim didn’t know the suspect but described him as a white man about 5 feet and 8 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, and wearing glasses and a green hat. The victim did not know the appliances models or serial numbers. Estimated value of the theft is $80 for the dryer and $40 for the dryer.
April 9
Identity theft: Responded at 1:17 p.m. on April 9 to an identity theft report on the 5000 block of Millus Cove. The victim said he spoke with a collection company last year and found out that an outstanding Comcast bill of $633 in his name was in collections. He said he didn’t open the account, which ran from July 1999 to September 2012, and he doesn’t know who did. He also never lived at the North Little Rock Ark., address used for the account. When he disputed the debt, the collection agency gave the account back to Comcast, which reduced the bill to $355.36.
April 11
Aggravated assault: Responded at 2:52 p.m. on April 11 to an aggravated assault report on Brunswick Road. The victim said that around 6 p.m. on April 10, he was traveling northbound on Brunswick Road, about half a mile south of Tennessee 385, on his Honda CBR motorcycle. He was behind a white Chevrolet Trailblazer. When the victim tried to pass the Chevy by crossing over the double yellow line, he said the Chevy swerved into the lane of oncoming traffic and struck the motorcycle without crashing it. Both vehicles stopped, and the men began arguing about who was at fault — the driver who swerved or the motorcyclist who tried to pass on a double-yellow line. Then both men continued northbound on the road to the Bolton High School baseball fields, where they continued arguing without any physical contact. The victim said that the crash was intentional, and the responding deputy noticed minor damage to the motorcycle. The victim was not injured. The motorcyclist said he has not had any altercations with the Chevy driver in the past.
April 13
Theft from motor vehicle: Responded at 4:45 a.m. on April 13 to a reported theft from motor vehicle on the 6000 block of Armistead. A citizen on Wilder Street said she saw two unknown black men walking down her street and entering a black Infiniti parked across the street on the 6000 block of Armistead. She said the suspects left on foot, eastbound on Wilder. Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspects. The Infiniti’s owner said his $200 Garmin GPS was stolen from the unlocked car. Officers also checked other cars in the area. In a separate report, a car owner just two houses away reported an attempted theft, but no property was stolen. (See next incident, below.) During their search, the officers recovered one of the suspect’s backpacks on Armistead, found the missing GPS unit inside and returned it to the victim. The backpack also contained two medicine bottles for an address in Gallaway. The officer asked dispatch to have Gallaway police follow up at the address.
Theft from motor vehicle: Responded at 4:30 a.m. on April 13 to a reported theft from a motor vehicle on the 11700 block of Wilder Street. The victim said two unknown suspect had ransacked his Chevrolet Malibu but nothing was stolen.
Other theft, non-specific: Responded at 9:20 p.m. on April 13 to a report of other theft, non-specific, at Zaxby’s restaurant on U.S. 64. The victim said someone stole his Apple iPhone from the table while he went to get napkins. He could not provide any suspect information. The victim remotely activated the tracking function on the phone, but it was turned off. Dispatch entered the stolen phone into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.
April 15
Simple assault/DV: Responded at 5:19 a.m. on April 15 to a report of simple assault/DV at I-40 and Tennessee 385. The victim said her boyfriend was asleep in the rear of the vehicle, and she was driving them back from his singing engagement in Nashville when he woke up and began punching her in the head. She said it occurred on I-40 just east of the Arlington exit. She drove to her home on the 12100 block of Hidden Trail, where the boyfriend fled in his pickup truck (unknown make and model). The victim said she thought the suspect would be driving home to Marion, Ark. The officer didn’t observe any injuries on the victim, and she completed a “hold harmless” form.
Theft from building: Responded at 5:43 p.m. on April 15 to a reported theft from building on the 5000 block of Mabry Lane. The victim said that between Feb. 15 and April 15 her gold and diamond necklace was stolen from her home. The necklace is a 14k gold 30-inch herringbone chain with a diamond cross pendant approximately 1.5 to 2 inches tall (valued around $1,000). She said she keeps the necklace in her jewelry box, and she noticed recently that it had been moved. She suspects her stepson took it. He was living in the home but had been kicked out earlier that day. The stepson was recently arrested in Fayette County for theft of property.
April 16
Drugs/narcotics violation/misdemeanor: Responded at 10:08 a.m. on April 16 to a report of found property at the intersection of Polk and Brockwell roads, near the Arlington water tower. The officer found a blue backpack hanging in a tree, and the backpack held a sandwich bag of 3.5 grams of marijuana, a large clear glass pipe and a small brown pipe.
Burglary/residential: Responded at 12:15 p.m. on April 16 to a reported residential burglary on the 5700 block of Reed Bend Cove. The victim said that between 5 and 9 a.m. that morning someone entered the house and disabled the deadbolt lock on her bedroom door. An unknown suspect stole her cellphone, its charger and $80. She said her son had missed his buss and was at the house at the time of the theft. The responding officer lifted prints and took photos of the crime scene.
April 17
Intimidation: Responded at 9:20 a.m. on April 17 to a report of intimidation on the 5400 block of Airline Road. The complainant named a suspect that he said has been threatening to fight his son for the previous couple of days. The complainant said the suspect had already stolen a ring from the home. Then on April 16, the suspect kept trying to arrange a fight, so the victim told the suspect to come to the house. The father arrived home just as the suspect, accompanied by friends, ran toward the victim. The boys scattered when the father arrived. The father wanted to report the incident in case anything else happens. The father said no report was taken when the suspect was questioned previously about school rumors of the pending fight, and he wanted a report taken this time.
April 18
Intimidation/DV: Responded at 2:32 p.m. on April 18 to a report of intimidation/DV on the 5500 block of Mary Lane. The victim said her estranged husband was harassing and intimidating her via phone calls and text messages. They have been separated since August 2013, and the ongoing threats and intimidation have intensified since February. She saved text messages with implied and direct threats to her and her children. One said, “I have dreams suffocating you like you did my son, baby killer, you’ll pay your wrongs won’t be forgiven.” She also said her husband ranted at her for nine minutes over the phone earlier that day, saying, “I’m gonna kill the people you love, then I’m gonna kill you, you know I have plenty of guns.”
The victim fears for her life and the safety of her children. She said she intends to prosecute and seek an order of protection against her husband. There is a significant domestic report history dating back to 2011 for the couple. The responding officer advised the victim and gave her a domestic violence pamphlet.
April 22
Simple assault: Responded at 9:05 p.m. on April 22 to a reported simple assault on the 12000 block of Country Valley Drive. The complainant and his 13-year-old son met the responding officer, and the boy said he was riding his bicycle eastbound along Bridal Drive in Arlington around 7 p.m. that night when he approached three unknown male white juveniles who were walking westbound on the sidewalk. The victim said they walked onto the street, and one yelled and pushed him down. He scraped his left knee and bent the bike’s handlebar, making it unusable. While the victim was still lying on the street, the second of the juveniles punched the left side of his face. The blow bruised and swelled his nose, and it swelled and reddened the left side of his face, under the eye. The third juvenile watched but did not participate in the attack. Afterward, the three juveniles strolled west on Bridal Drive. The victim used his cell phone to call his father, and they met at home. The father said his son’s injuries were minor and did not need medical attention.
The victim said the attack was unprovoked, the attackers were unknown, and they didn’t try to steal the bike or any other items. The father said he wants to prosecute if the suspects are identified. No other witnesses have come forward.
April 23
Vandalism/misdemeanor: Responded at 8:23 a.m. on April 3 to the 5600 block of Deco Circle, regarding an alleged vandalism on April 22 at the Arlington Sports Complex. The complainant said he noticed that morning that the passenger side door handle of his vehicle had been sprayed with something. He touched the area and then mistakenly touched his face, which began to tingle and burn, causing him to believe the spray was a chemical agent. The responding officer observed an orange substance on the vehicle’s front passenger door handle. The complainant said he had returned home the previous day after attending a game at the complex, and his vehicle was parked at his home the rest of the night. He didn’t notice the substance that evening because it was dark.
The complainant suspects his ex-wife or her new boyfriend of the vandalism, but he had no proof. The former couple have been divorced since April 2013, and he said he has a restraining order against her. The ex-wife was also at the sports complex the previous night to watch their child’s game. The complainant said his parents’ vehicle had also been sprayed with a chemical agent and that they also have a restraining order against the ex-wife.
To rule out a random incident, the complainant said he contacted several other parents who attended the game, but no one else reported their vehicle being sprayed. He also said he would take his vehicle to a car wash to remove the sprayed chemical.
April 26
Simple assault/DV: Responded at 12:29 a.m. on April 26 to a report of simple assault/DV on the 11100 block of Ewe Turn Drive. The victim and his brother, the suspect, fought over the brother’s annoying noises. The victim said his brother has lived with him since late February. The victim said his brother was drunk and began cursing and threatening violence when told to be quiet. The victim told his brother to leave and went upstairs despite the brother’s threats. The brother refused to leave, and they kept arguing.
Then the brother grabbed the victim and pushed him, and the victim grabbed his brother back before the two walked downstairs. They wrestled in the garage, and the brother kicked and broke the door frame leading to the kitchen. They went outside, and the victim was inattentive just long enough for his brother to punch him over his right eye. The brother left in his white Nissan Pathfinder. The responding officers observed the blood and knot on the victim’s head and called for medical aid. The victim’s wounds were treated, but he was not transported. A crime scene technician took pictures of the victim’s injuries and the damaged door. The victim completed a “hold harmless” form.
Theft of other trailer: Responded at 12:43 p.m. on April 26 to a report of a stolen trailer on the 5600 block of Airline Road. The victim said he parked his Chevy Silverado truck and the attached trailer at work after lunch at 11:20 a.m. Minutes later, a friend told him the trailer was missing. Around 11:25 p.m., a witness said he saw a white male with short dark hair unhook the trailer from the truck, hook it back up to a Chevrolet Blazer and drive the Blazer southbound on Airline toward I-40. At the time of the report, the victim could not give a vehicle identification number (VIN) for the trailer.
April 27
Shoplifting/misdemeanor: Responded at 1:52 p.m. on April 27 to a reported misdemeanor shoplifting at the Dollar General store on Highway 70 in Arlington. An anonymous caller told the assistant manager that a black female shoplifter wearing a gray hoodie and black pants was about to enter the store. A suspect of that description soon entered, and the assistant manager watched her add several items to a shopping cart, but the suspect only bring two items to the register. Meanwhile, the suspect’s green purse seemed to be filled with several store items. The suspect left at 1:39 p.m. and got onto Tennessee 70, and the assistant manager reported the suspicious customer and described her vehicle.
Deputies located and stopped the vehicle at U.S. 70 and Airline in Arlington. The suspect had a large green purse on the front passenger seat, full of Dollar General merchandise that had not been purchased. Her driver’s license had also been suspended since Jan. 30. Deputies arrested her for theft of property under $500 and driving while suspended. The stolen items totaled $58.45. Deputies had the suspect’s vehicle towed, and they completed a property receipt and returned the property to the store. A surveillance camera at the location showed the suspect leaving the store after purchasing only two of the items. The suspect was later held at Shelby County Jail East.
ARLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ONLY
April 1
Vandalism/misdemeanor: Responded at 3:42 a.m. on April 1 to a report of misdemeanor vandalism at Arlington High School. The victim said her son drove her Toyota Tacoma to school that day, parking it at 6:55 a.m. in the student parking lot on the east side of the building. When he returned at 2:15 p.m., someone had used a window marker to draw lines and circles about the truck’s windows and body and write a swear word and a racial slur on the vehicle’s hood. The boy washed off the vandalism before the responding officer could arrive and view it. The mother and son said they had no suspect information, and the vehicle was not damaged. The school’s principal said he would check the school’s video surveillance the next day for a possible suspect.
April 3
Theft from motor vehicle: Responded at 11:50 a.m. on April 3 to a reported theft from motor vehicle at Arlington High School. The victim said she left her wallet in the vehicle’s back seat when she arrived at school that morning. Her little brother was sitting in the back seat and forgot to lock the back door when he left. When she went to her car around 11:10 a.m., she noticed that someone had stolen about $130 from her wallet. Nothing else was missing. The deputy was unable to pull up any camera footage that faced the parking lot.
April 7
Forcible fondling: Responded at 8:15 a.m. on April 7 to Arlington High School. The female victim named a young man who she said had touched her inappropriately during sixth period in the gym on April 4. In a written statement, she said the suspect had touched and grabbed her breasts, and she told him to stop. She got mad, and he slapped her breasts again. She said she left the class very angry, saying she would tell on him. The victim said the suspect then texted her, calling her a whore and saying he didn’t care.
April 8
Drugs/narcotics violation/misdemeanor: Responded at 9:21 a.m. on April 8 to a report of a misdemeanor drugs/narcotics violation at Arlington High School. An anonymous tip informed the assistant principal that a male student had a small bag of marijuana in his front right pocket. The assistant principal and a witness confronted the suspect and asked him if he had any illegal substances on him. The boy pulled out a plastic bag of what was later confirmed as marijuana. He was issued a juvenile summons for possession of a controlled substance and suspended for 180 days from Shelby County Schools. The marijuana was tagged and placed in the Memphis Police Department’s property room.
April 21
Theft from building: Responded at 11:01 a.m. on April 21 to a report of theft from a building at Arlington High School. A mother reported that her daughter’s cell phone was stolen from school that morning. The victim said she believes it was taken from her backpack in the 200 hallway. The mother said she received a text message from the daughter’s phone, requesting passwords to certain applications. A locator application on the phone showed it to be in the school parking lot, but deputies investigated and could not locate it. The victim’s mother said they would try to track it to a home address that afternoon. There was no camera footage of the incident.
Simple assault: Responded at 1:29 p.m. on April 21 to a report of simple assault at the Arlington High School gym during the school’s Tiger Time. Several females were still in a physical fight when officers arrived. A coach said the fight escalated from two to five girls before she could intervene, so she called for help. Three school leaders interviewed the students separately.
The first two girls got into a hair-grabbing fight over something that one’s brother did last fall. Both girls received a juvenile summons for assault and a 10-day suspension. The third student said she tried to break up the fight, but others said she hit the second student; she received a juvenile summons and a five-day suspension.
The fourth student said she was trying to stop the first girl from fighting, but she fought back after the second girl struck her on the left side of her chest. She received a juvenile summons and a five-day suspension. The fifth student said the third student pushed her in an effort to get to the second student, so she struck back to defend herself. She received a juvenile summons and a five-day suspension.
The assistant principals notified the girls’ parents. The responding officers were unable to access video footage from the gym’s two cameras immediately afterward, and they planned to return the next morning to review the footage and submit a continuation to their incident report.
April 25
Theft from building: Responded at 10 a.m. on April 25 to a reported theft from a building at Arlington High School. The victim said she left her Texas Instruments calculator on her desk when went into the hallway during class change. A male classmate stayed behind in the classroom. When she returned during fourth period, the calculator was gone. A witness reported seeing the boy open the desk, get the calculator, drop it, then pick it up again and leave the room. The victim confronted the suspect, who let her search his backpack. She did not find the missing calculator. Another student said the boy was trying to sell the calculator to another female student. A school administrator checked with the female student, who didn’t have the calculator on her person and said she had never had it. The calculator’s location remains unknown, The suspect was on a five-day school suspension for an unrelated incident at the time of the report.
April 28
Theft from building: Responded at 10 a.m. on April 28 to a report of a theft from a building at Arlington High School. The theft reportedly occurred between 7 a.m. February 21 and 10:43 a.m. April 28. Detectives were investigating another report on April 24 and developed a suspect. They conducted a search warrant at his house on the 5900 block of Olivia Falls and found a plastic bag of phones, including a pink Apple iPhone 5C. A detective obtained a search warrant to search the phone for its owner, and a pop-up message advised the phone was stolen and what number to call. They spoke to a father at that number, who said the phone (valued at $550) had been stolen from Arlington High School on Feb. 21 during school hours but had not been reported.
Theft from building: Responded at 10:55 a.m. on April 28 to a reported theft from a building at Arlington High School. A female student said her black Apple iPhone 4 had been stolen on April 23. She thought it had been in her backpack but she was not sure. Then she heard that several phones had been confiscated from a student who was arrested, and she wanted to check with officers to see if hers was among those recovered. At the time of this report, the phone had not been located, but the report is still being investigated. The victim said she has since replaced the phone, and she will prosecute if anyone is charged in this case.
Theft from building: Responded at 12:20 p.m. on April 28 to a reported theft from a building at Arlington High School. A mother said her daughter’s cell phone was stolen that day between noon and 12:15 p.m., either in class or in the hallway. The victim said she tried to call it several times, but the phone was turned off. She said she will prosecute if anyone is charged in this case.
April 29
Theft from building: Responded at 9:40 a.m. on April 29 to a reported theft from a building at Arlington High School. On April 24, detectives were investigating another report and identified a student as a suspect. They obtained a search warrant for his home on the 5900 block of Olivia Falls. While conducting the search, they found a white Apple iPhone 5S in a plastic bag with other stolen phones in the home’s attic. Detectives prepared a search warrant to search the phones and identify their owners. They were able to identify the iPhone’s owner and contacted the family. They spoke to the mother, who said her daughter’s phone was stolen from her backpack on April 22 while the girl was walking to class.
