Petitioners against housing development
About 850 Bartlett homeowners signed petitions presented to Mayor Oscar T. Yates this week (Jan. 25, 1979), objecting to a proposed subsidized housing project at Raleigh-LaGrange and Sycamore View just outside the city limits. Over 1,000 names also reportedly appear on similar petitions presented by Shelby County residents to Memphis Mayor Chandler early this week. Dwayne Bird of 5703 Robin Hop, commented in representation of citizen’s groups in Bartlett Woods, Surrey Woods and Elmore Park, “We have so many zoning problem in our subdivision now, and think we’ve worked it out to keep surrounding residential zoning. We’re just objecting to the location of this proposed project.”

Bartlett resident sees lifelong dream
When Memphis State University held its commencement exercises on Dec. 18, 1993, at the Pyramid, a Bartlett resident realized her goal of receiving a doctorate in counseling psychology. Achieving her doctorate came when Mary Ann Knack was 52 years old, and after all three of her children had graduated from college. “I began college in 1968 when my youngest children started kindergarten,” Mrs. Knack said. ”I worked for the Department of Human Services for two years and as an alcohol and drug counselor at Charter Lakeside Hospital for seven years.”

Panthers escape Cordova rally
After witnessing a fourth quarter that almost resulted in his team squandering a 15-point lead, Bartlett coach Don Deaton was more than relieved to still be undefeated in district play. The Panthers held on to a slim advantage to capture a 47-44 win over Cordova at home on Jan. 23, 2004. The visiting Wolves missed five three-point baskets in the final minute, including three on the game’s final possession. “We got lucky,” said Deaton. ”That game shouldn’t have been as close as it was. We got passive on offense and soft on defense.”

Aldermen table alcohol permit
Bartlett’s Board of Aldermen, succumbing to concerns from neighboring residents and seeking legal opinion on ramifications of language in the liquor and beer ordinance, tabled a request by Denise Suthoff to allow the sale of beer and wine at the Cedar Hall Bed & Breakfast and wedding hall Monday (Jan. 28, 2013). Acting as the city’s Beer Board, the aldermen listened to a half dozen neighbors who voiced concern over the sale of alcohol in a primarily residential neighborhood. Among them was Dan Melancon of Chatham Pond, who argued the cities’ liquor and beer ordinance does not allow alcohol sales by statute.
