A Bartlett woman has been indicted on vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs, according to Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
The indictment stem
s from a crash last summer that claimed the life of a 27-year-old woman in northeast Memphis.
A grand jury indicted defendant Blakley Michelle Jenkins, 30, on charges of vehicular homicide involving intoxication and recklessness, and driving under the influence of marijuana, Xanax and a toxic level of an antihistamine.
Investigators said the fatal crash was around 1:30 p.m. on July 6, 2018, when Jenkins’ Chevrolet Tahoe exited I-40 at a high rate of speed, struck the edge of a concrete median and crossed several lanes of traffic on Jackson Avenue.
She struck another vehicle and killed the driver, Jasmine Latrice Cole of Memphis.
Jenkins also has a prior DUI conviction from 2015.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Vanessa Murtaugh of the DA’s DUI Prosecution Unit whose members work with local law enforcement seeking to reduce the number of DUI-related fatalities and injuries. The Unit also conducts training sessions to update law enforcement officers on changes in traffic and DUI laws.
