Commissioners support Lakeland outlet mall project

The Lakeland Board of Commissioners recently passed a resolution declaring support for the redevelopment of the Lakeland Outlet Mall.

The resolution expressed a desire for Lakeland to assist the Lakeland Mall in opening as soon as possible including appropriate and feasible incentives. City staff and consultants are rapidly working on a package of incentives to support the Lakeland Grand Outlets Mall project.

The Lakeland Board of Commissioners recognized the economic, shopping and service benefits resulting from the Lakeland Mall project, both locally and regionally.

Lakeland Grand Outlets will encompass approximately 374,000 sq. ft. and will be constructed after the old mall is razed. The annex building will be renovated to match the new structures.

Gilad Development’s site plan for the 34 acres, including the open-air upscale outlet mall, was approved by the Lakeland Municipal Planning Commission in summer 2013.

The estimated time of completion is about two years to coincide with the new interchange at Canada and I-40. Anticipated start date for interchange construction is spring 2014.
