The Tennessee Department of Education released school-level TVAAS results on Aug. 16.
The BCS district released a statement, saying, “Bartlett City Schools is extremely proud to have earned an overall composite TVAAS level of 5, the highest growth level possible. Bartlett City Schools is also one of only eleven school districts in the State to earn the Level 5 distinction for each subject-area (Literacy, Numeracy, Science, and Social Studies). This achievement is due to the hard work of our teachers and students with support from our parents. We are grateful for these efforts and will continue to strive for excellence.”
In addition to BCS, Arlington Community Schools and Germantown Municipal School District also had a rank of 5.
Millington dropped to a 2 from its previous Level 3.
Lakeland dropped to a 1, compared to last year’s 5; however, the district also started a new school last year from scratch – Lakeland Middle Preparatory School.
In a statement sent to parents, LSS Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell said,“Results for 2017-18 at LMPS are considered to be baseline scores for the school and, as such, will not be considered in district accountability designations,” he said. “This is due to being a new school and receiving nearly half of our students at that school from outside of our district in our first year.”
Arlington Community Schools maintained its high overall score of Level 5, which included growth in math from 2 to 5. However, the results also showed a drop in the literacy category from 5 to 1. The district ranked 4 in science and 5 in social studies.
“Literacy statewide scores were lower than the previous year,” the ACS district said in a statement. “Like the state average, ACS also fell. However in terms of literacy achievement, ACS remained higher than the state average. We’re continuing to comb through the individual data points to see how we can best address this subject in our upper grades to make sure that all of our students are growing.”
TVAAS measures student growth year over year, regardless of whether the student is proficient on the state assessment. In calculating a TVAAS score, a student’s performance is compared relative to the performance of his or her peers who have performed similarly on past assessments.
Because students’ performance is compared to that of their peers, and because their peers are moving through the same standards and assessment transitions at the same time, any drops in proficiency during these transitions have no impact on the ability of teachers, schools, and districts to earn strong TVAAS scores, according to the TVAAS website.
Transitions to higher standards and expectations do not change the fact that the Tennessee Department of Education still wants students to make a full year’s worth of growth, relative to their peers who are all experiencing the same transition.
Growth scores should be used alongside achievement scores from TNReady to show the fuller picture of students’ performance.
