Colleges and universities have the following announcements about local students.
Scholarships
Several Shelby County students have been awarded scholarships to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin for the 2018-2019 academic year:
- Dakota R. Long of Memphis, daughter of April Long and Joe Long, will be a freshman. She received the Chancellor Scholarship.
- Daniel B. St. John of Arlington, son of Jason and Penny Woolbright, will be a freshman. He also received the Chancellor Scholarship.
- Jason Andrew Vaden of Bartlett, son of Louis and Jan Vaden, will be a freshman. He received the Achieve Scholarship.
Academic honors
Ethan Watson of Arlington was named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. Watson is majoring in computer science and mathematics. To achieve the dean’s list distinction, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality point average of 3.5 or greater out of a possible 4.0 and carry no single grade lower than a C- during the course of their college career. Each student receives a letter of commendation and congratulation from their college dean.
Watson also is a member of the University Honors Program, which offers high-caliber students the chance to further hone their studies and interests, live in special-interest on-campus housing and participate in one or two honors courses each term. Invitation into the honors program is highly competitive, and students must maintain a high GPA and strong commitment to campus leadership to remain a part.
Activities
Baylor Bearden of Lakeland recently was selected for the Capstone Men and Women group at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Capstone Men and Women serve as official ambassadors of UA. They assist the University president’s office, admissions and alumni during functions held on campus and in other locations, as well as host daily tours of the campus for prospective students and other visitors.
Graduation
Three local residents are among the more than 400 graduates who received a diploma at Harding University’s commencement exercises Dec. 16, 2017, in Searcy, Ark. They are:
- Zachary Beasley of Arlington who received a bachelor of arts degree in kinesiology
- Brenna McKee of Arlington, who received a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting
- Phillip White of Bartlett, who received a bachelor of business administration degree in finance and a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish.
