July 30 open house set for new Lakeland middle school

Lakeland School System

The Lakeland School System is ready to unveil its new $20 million Lakeland Middle Preparatory School on July 30.

Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell, the Lakeland School System Board of Education and LMPS principal Matt Adler will host the public and both elected and appointed officials at a dedication, ribbon cutting and open house for the new school at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30. The school is at 5020 Lions Crest Drive, which can be accessed by taking Canada Road just north of the intersection of Canada Road and U.S. 70 and then turning right into the site on the newly constructed Campus Drive.

The new 112,000 square foot facility will welcome more than 600 students in grades 5-8 during the 2017-18 school year, which begins in August. Lakeland Middle Preparatory School joins Lakeland Elementary as the second school in the Lakeland School System and will allow the system to grow from a K-5 system with approximately 940 students to a K-8 system with approximately 1,500 students in its first year.

The site is part of a 94-acre piece of land that will add a high school and a full collection of athletic facilities in the future. There is no timetable yet for the completion of the high school or athletic facilities.

Current and former members of the city board and school board plan to attend along with elected and appointed representatives from throughout Shelby County. The event will begin with a brief dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting, and then guests will be invited to walk the building in an open house format.
