The Bartlett Police Department (BPD) handled the following incidents during April 18-24, 2016. This listing includes the most notable incidents for the reporting period and does not necessarily reflect all police activity.
Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed BPD reports.
April 18
Silver Hill and Cherry Hill (suspicious vehicle)
A patrol officer noticed a car in disarray at 7:48 a.m. April 18. The car, a maroon Chevy Lumina, had part of a door panel lying against the driver’s door along with a chrome four-way tire tool and a bent car antenna lying in the street next to the driver’s door.
The car was legally parked at the intersection of Silver Hill and Cherry Hill.
The officer asked a passerby if he knew who owned the car, and the person directed him to an home on Silver Hill Lane. The resident there said her 17-year-old son drives it, and he parked the car there last night around 10 p.m. Someone, however, had stolen her silver iPod Nano ($30) from her Honda Accord that was parked in the driveway. She said she always leaves her vehicle unlocked but she normally takes her iPod inside.
Englishill Drive (theft)
A man said someone stole his weed trimmer on April 18 when he left it beside the curb briefly.
The man had parked in front of a Colonyhill home and worked, then left the tool there while he went to a store for about 10 minutes.
U.S. 64 (fire)
A citizen flagged down an officer at Mojo’s restaurant (7124 U.S. 64), saying the dumpster behind the building was on fire. The witness saw two dark-skinned male juveniles running from the dumpster area north toward Crowell Street. Bartlett First Department extinguished the fire.
Stage Road at Elmore Park (multiple violations)
An officer stopped a vehicle on Stage Road around 7 p.m. April 18 when he noticed the driver’s side brake light was out. The driver consented to a search of his vehicle and body, and the officer found a wrapper in the man’s left sock that contained a brown powdery substance.
The suspect admitted it was heroin. He had priors for possession of a controlled substance and was taken to Bartlett Jail for booking and processing.
Davies Plantation (multiple charges)
An officer stopped a car that was traveling east on Davies Plantation Road when the vehicle disregarded a stop sign.
There were three people in the vehicle, which smelled like marijuana to the officer. The officer also saw marijuana residue on the center console and told the driver and two passengers to get out.
In a search of the vehicle, the officer found a small bag on the driver’s side floor board under the gas pedal. It contained 20.4 grams (grams total weight, or GTW) of marijuana. The officer also found a small bottle that contained two pills of Tizor Etizolam and a small plastic bag containing 1.1g GTW of methamphetamine.
April 20
U.S. 64 (auto burglary)
Someone broke into a Chevrolet Silverado that was parked at Serra Chevrolet (7850 U.S. 64), causing $2,250 in damages and property loss. The incident happened between 5 p.m. April 18 and 6:30 p.m. April 20, when it was reported. The Silverado was parked on the lot near St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett.
Damages included a broken driver’s side window ($200), as well as a damaged driver’s side door frame ($500). Items stolen included a Boss DVD player with a six-inch touch screen ($300), a Boss Chaos Extreme amplifier ($300), two Rockford Fosgate subwoofers in a black enclosure box($600), and the stereo dash mount ($300).
Laurelhill (theft of bicycle)
Someone stole a $500 bike from an open carport overnight between April 19 and 20.
It was a blue, 1980s model, custom-built, single-speed, Schwinn road bike.
April 21
Wheelers Place (aggravated burglary in progress)
An officer responded to a call about a burglary in progress around 6:30 a.m. April 21. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a blue shirt and orange shorts.
Responding officers found a suspect of that description behind a locked back yard gate at Wheelers Place.
They took him into custody and identified him as a Juvenile who was living at Youth Villages (7410 Memphis-Arlington Road). He told officers he was hungry and looking for food.
The homeowners said they work up to a security alarm when someone tried to get into their home through a back window. The wife opened their bedroom door, noticed a window was open and woke her husband. he hit the distress alarm and noticed a white male in their back yard, trying to get into the shed.
Under questioning, the juvenile stated he had robbed the Dollar Tree about three weeks ago. The officer stopped and read him his Miranda Rights, but the suspect said he knew his rights and quoted them to the officer.
The suspect also said he had shoplifted from a store across from Kroger’s about two or three weeks ago. He was taken back to Youth Villages and released with a juvenile summons.
Hillman Way (auto burglary)
A woman on Hillman Way woke around 2:30 a.m. on April 21 when her dog was barking loudly at the door. A few hours later, she came outside and noticed several items had been stolen from her vehicles.
Stolen items included two cases of Budweiser ($40) taken from her Ford F-150 and a Vera Wang purse ($100) from her Chevy Tahoe. The purse contained $500 in cash, her First Tennessee bank card, Suntrust Bank card, driver’s license and beer permit.
She advised the officer that she had cancelled her cards and called her bank before the cards were used. Both vehicles had been parked and left unlocked in the driveway the previous night.
Patricia Ellen Drive (vandalism)
A woman found the upper glass panel of her storm door had been shattered on April 21. She told the responding officer there was a small hole in the lower right corner of the gas before it shattered completely and fell out of the door. She said the hole looked like one left by a pellet gun.
April 23
Davies Plantation (multiple violations)
An officer stopped a vehicle that was westbound on Davies Plantation at Davies Manor shortly after midnight on April 23. The vehicle’s passenger-size tail light was not working.
Speaking to the driver, the officer smelled the odor of intoxicant that became stronger as the driver talked. The driver also had bloodshot and glassy eyes.
The man mentioned that he had a handgun in the car, and the officer located a loaded .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun in the center console. It had 15 .40-caliber rounds in it.
The officer also found a half-consumed 24-ounce Miller Light beer can, still cold to the touch, in the vehicle’s cup holder. A routine driver check revealed that the suspect had a previous conviction for driving under the influence from Jan. 5, 2001, out of Florida. The officer arrested the driver.
Boyd Lane (individual robbery)
A man said an armed robber confronted him at the side door of his condo the evening of April 23.The victim said the suspect was an unknown black male with a black semi-automatic handgun.
The suspect demanded the man’s Regions Bank bag containing a cash deposit, as well as the victim’s cell phone and keys. Then he ran southbound between the condos and then westbound through the parking lot.
The suspect is a black male, 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 180-200 lbs. and about 28-32 years old. He wore a black baseball hat with no logos, a long-sleeved black shirt, dark jeans, shoes of an unknown color.
