The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) handled the following incidents in Arlington during the last half of February. (See last week’s issue for earlier February incidents.)

Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.

Feb. 18

Country Valley Drive (simple assault/domestic violence)

A mother reported her son Feb. 18 for hurting her after an incident at their home on the 12000 block of Country Valley Drive.

She said he got very upset when she confronted him around 9 p.m. about his stealing money, buying vaping paraphernalia and bringing it into their home. He reportedly grabbed her wrist, twisted her arm and made her fear additional bodily harm and assault. Then the son took his brother’s bicycle and fled the home.

The responding officer completed a runaway report because the son couldn’t be located, but he returned while officers were checking the area. Officers returned to the home and detained him. The mother declined any medical attention.

Feb. 19

Chester Street (felony vandalism)

A property owner on the 5000 block of Chester Street said someone drove through his gate, proceeded through the construction site and destroyed an uninstalled septic tank near the house. The damage happened between 5 p.m. Feb. 18 and 7:30 a.m. Feb. 19.

Airline Road (intimidation)

The mother of a female student at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road) reported Feb. 19 that a male student threatened her daughter the previous day.

The suspect reportedly told the girl to watch her back, he knows where she parks her car, and he will cut her.

In an interview with two assistant principals and a school resource officer, the victim and a witness said there were in class when the suspect told them to stop staring at him. He also said they were too loud, and he swore and called them foul names. The suspect admitted cursing but denied making any threats. He received a three-day out-of-school suspension.

Airline Road (theft from building)

Someone stole a student’s iPhone at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road, the victim reported on Feb. 19. The phone was in his backpack in the locker room during gym class.

Longleaf Oak Trail (simple assault/domestic violence)/strong>

Officers responded to a 911 hangup on the 12100 block of Longleaf Oak Trail around 11:20 p.m. Feb. 19. They found a woman sitting in her vehicle in the driveway, crying and intoxicated. She said she and her boyfriend had a fight but it was over and he was gone.

She said no one was in the house, but officers heard a door shut when they escorted her inside. They found the boyfriend, also intoxicated, in the garage.

The woman said they argued around 10:40 p.m. about the lingerie outfit she bought for him. He was furious she bought the wrong outfit, so he pushed her down to the bedroom floor, she said.

The boyfriend wouldn’t talk about the altercation at first but finally said the couple had argued about another man. He denied that the argument got physical.

The boyfriend said he was on probation until October for a prior domestic violence incident with the girlfriend. Officers arrested him and charged him with domestic assault.

Feb. 21

Mary Alice Drive (simple assault/domestic violence)

A wife reported Feb. 21 that her husband assaulted her at their home on the 12200 block of Mary Alice Drive after she stopped him from driving drunk.

The woman said her husband drove at first when they and their son were returning from a friend’s party around 3 a.m. She said his driving was terrible because he had drunk so much, and she told him to pull into the parking lot of the Kroger store on U.S. 70 and Airline Road so she could drive.

She got into the driver’s seat but he refused to get into the passenger seat and became irate, she said. So she told him to stay there briefly while she drive their son home. She returned and drove around the parking lot but couldn’t find her husband, so she returned home. She said he arrived about 15 minutes later.

He reportedly pushed her, hit her and called her names before he went to their son’s room and pushed him, slapped him in the face multiple times, and made him fall to the ground. After a few minutes, the husband left in an unknown direction in a red Dodge Journey.

A nearby neighbor called 911 when he heard yelling and the sounds of a fight.

Both the wife and son refused transport and medical attention, and her sister took them elsewhere for the night in case the husband returned.

Milton Wilson Boulevard (theft of vehicle parts/accessories)

A woman reported Feb. 21 that someone had taken the 2016 decal from her vehicle’s license plate. The vehicle, a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, had been parked on a dead-end road near her home since about November, and she didn’t know when the tab was taken.

U.S. 70 (misdemeanor drugs/narcotics violation)

A female worker at the Kroger gas station (11635 U.S. 70) reported problems with a customer around 3 p.m. Feb. 21 after she refused to let him buy a lottery ticket with a debit card. She said he walked around and begged other customers for money.

Responding officers saw him walking away from customer vehicles toward a white Toyota Corolla with a flat tire at Pump No. 9. They told him to move to a parking space near the fuel pumps to make room for others. Instead, he drove around the curb and struck the SCSO vehicle, causing minor damage.

When officers detained him, they detected the smell of marijuana on him. He was unsteady on his feet and required the support of two officers to stand upright. A search of his vehicle turned up a brown leafy substance on his vehicle’s console that smelled like marijuana. They also found a bag containing more of the substance, a grinder and five prescription decongestant tablets (the suspect did not have a prescription for the medication).

A field sobriety test was not possible for safety reasons, and the suspect appeared to be heavily intoxicated. He was taken to the Shelby County Jail, where he consented to have his blood drawn for testing. The approximate weight of the suspected marijuana was 3.5 grams. He was booked into the jail on DUI and drug charges.

Feb. 22

Afton Place (simple assault/domestic violence)

A woman reported that her boyfriend had been drinking and assaulted her in front of their two children on Feb. 22.

The couple were arguing in the bedroom of their home on the 12200 block of Afton Place around 8:40-8:50 p.m. She said she was sitting on the bed, holding one of their children, when the boyfriend approached her in a threatening manner, stood over her and said, “I’m standing right here, what are you going to do?”

She told him she would call law enforcement if he didn’t leave. When she tried to call, he climbed atop her, pushed her down on the bed, and tried to take away her phone, she said. She pushed him off with her feet, and he fled in a Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Afton Place.

Their older child was also in the bedroom and witnessed the incident. The woman said none of them needed medical attention, but she did get several scratches on her right forearm. She said there have been multiple instances of domestic violence between the two but she has only called the SCSO one time previously. She refused transportation to another location.

Welbourne Cove (simple assault/domestic violence)

Someone reported a simple assault/ domestic violence incident on the 5100 block of Welbourne Cove between 5:45 p.m. and 6:14 p.m. Feb. 22. Additional information is not currently available.

Feb. 23

Wolf Woods Drive (theft from motor vehicle)

Someone stole lawn service tools from a pickup on the 11200 block of Wolf Woods Drive, the victim reported on Feb. 23.

The Chevrolet Silverado was parked in the victim’s driveway, and the tools were stolen between 8:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and 9:14 a.m. Feb. 23.

The serial number for one of the tools, a Red Max blower, was entered into the NCIC database.

Scarlet Ridge Drive (theft of vehicle parts/accessories)

An officer stopped a couple at the intersection of Mott Street and Chester Street because he recognized a stolen license plate on their vehicle.

The man said someone must have taken his license plate and replaced it with the stolen one. He speculated that someone must be playing a joke on him or an ex-employee was seeking revenge for being fired. The couple had no known criminal history and were not charged in the incident.

The officer took custody of the stolen license plate, placed information about the driver’s own stolen license plate into the NCIC database, and ensured the return of the first stolen license plate to its owner.

Feb. 25

Airline Road (misdemeanor vandalism)

A female student at Arlington High School (5475 Airline Road) said on Feb. 25 that someone vandalized the driver’s door to her black Jeep Cherokee the previous day. The damage happened between 6:40 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. in the student parking lot.

Feb. 27

Doctor Logan Road (simple assault/domestic violence)

Officers were called to the scene of a brother-sister argument at their home on the 11800 block of Doctor Logan Road on Feb. 27.

The sister said they were in the hallway when her brother started arguing wit her about parking her vehicle in front of their neighbor’s house. He tapped her nose twice and then pushed her, she said. She denied having any injuries and declined medical attention.

The brother said he mentioned the parking but didn’t tap her on the nose or push her.

Deputies did not see any marks on the sister and couldn’t determine who was the primary aggressor.

The brother chose to leave the residence for the rest of the evening.
