Arlington volunteer Lori Kuhuski named ACS ‘Global Hero of Hope’

Lori-Kuhuski-w-030316Lori Kuhuski of Arlington has been named a 2016 Global Relay For Life Hero of Hope by the American Cancer Society.

Heroes of Hope are cancer survivors or caregivers who have demonstrated a commitment to the mission of saving lives from the disease. As highly visible symbols of a personal victory over cancer, they share their personal stories in a variety of settings to motivate others to fight back against the disease. Kuhuski joins 26 international volunteers as part of the 2016 Global Hero of Hope program.

Relay-for-Life-RFL-logoKuhuski is a 26-year stage III colon cancer survivor and an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society. She has participated in Relay For Life since 2006 and has served in numerous Relay For Life committee positions including event chair, sponsorship chair and team retention chair.

Kuhuski was named one of Arizona’s Relay For Life Heroes of Hope in 2010. She continued her volunteerism when she moved to Tennessee in 2011 and served as event chair for Relay For Life of Germantown and team leader for Relay For Life of Memphis and Arlington.

In 2012, Kuhuski was named Tennessee Volunteer of the Year and became a Hero of Hope for the Mid-South Division in 2013.

“When these special volunteers share their struggles and experiences, they represent all cancer survivors and caregivers from around the world,” said Bob Chapman, managing director for Global Relay For Life for the American Cancer Society. “Through their stories, they inspire and encourage people facing cancer and motivate people to take action through things like participating in their local Relay For Life event.”

In addition to fundraising and raising awareness about cancer issues, Kuhuski serves on several leadership teams, including the Mid South Division Training Team where she helps train volunteers and staff.

In 2014, Kuhuski created a national Relay For Life Team composed of volunteers from around the world who meet at a Relay events each year to inspire and motivate fellow Relayers to finish the fight. Her team will travel to Relay For Life of Niagara Falls in New York this summer.

Kuhuski is also an advocate for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and serves as a delegate state lead, representing the Society on state and national levels to improve healthcare and quality of life for those fighting cancer.

Kuhuski is married and has two grown children who are involved with Relay For Life in their communities.
