BRC plans Jan. 9 Aerobathon
Ready to work on that fitness pledge for the new year? The Bartlett Recreation Center has just the right event. Its annual Aerobathon will be 9 a.m.-noon on Jan. 9.
Organizers say it is the ultimate setup for people who are eager to try out a new format or just work in a morning of cross-training.
Participants will take part in a variety of classes for 20-minute sessions.
A prize is available to the BRC member who brings the most guests.
This event is open to the public.

New stargazers to get help at Jan. 8 astronomy meeting
The Memphis Astronomical Society (MAS) will meet at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan 8, at Christian Brothers University.
The meeting is open to the public and will help beginners learn how to set up and use their telescopes (such as those recently acquired as Christmas presents).
The meeting will be in the Assisi Hall Science Auditorium- Room 155, on the CBU campus at East Parkway South and Central Avenue, Memphis. A campus map can be found at cbu.edu/assets/ 2091/cbumap2014.pdf.
Part 1 of the program will be about optics and Telescopes. Richard Moore will cover the various types of telescope designs, power, the magnitude scale, finder scopes, and types of mountings.
Part 2 will be about how to find celestial objects. William J. Busler will show how to use sky maps in finding and learning the major constellations and locating important celestial objects. He will then cover how to use a telescope to find the Sun, Moon, and planets, naked-eye stars and deep-sky objects, and a few other interesting objects located near easily found stars.
During the meeting, January sky maps and set-up directions will be distributed.
Weather permitting, attendees will go outside to the parking lot afterward, where MAS members will individually help visitors find celestial objects with their own telescopes. In case of inclement weather, MAS will hold an informal question-and-answer session.)
