The Bartlett Police Department (BPD) handled the following incidents for Aug. 17-23, 2015.
These are the most notable cases of the week and do not necessarily represent all BPD activities for the time period.
Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed BPD reports.
Aug. 17
Meadowlands Place (burglary)
Officers caught a burglary suspect after a homeowner called in a complaing around 7 a.m. Aug. 17.
The victim spotted a white male wearing a red T-shirt and khaki shorts enter the garage and walk away carrying a white bag. Officers caught up to him as he headed south through a yard. He was identified as a 16-year-old juvenile.
He confessed to stealing some sunglasses, altoids and $3 in cash from one unlocked car and a six-pack of beer from an open garage. Officers found eight beers in the white sack the suspect was carrying.
He also had in his possession four pairs of sunglasses, a phone charger, three $1 bills, and a brown Timex watch. The suspect said the sunglasses, charger, cash, and watch were stolen from unlocked cars on Andrews.
The suspect was issued a juvenile summons and was released on scene to his mother, who came to pick him up.
Aug. 19
Ellis Road (motor vehicle theft/truck)
A man reported on Aug. 19 that someone had tried to steal his 2001 green Chevy pickup from his driveway. He said the attempt happened between 9 p.m. Aug. 18 and 9 a.m. Aug. 19.
Someone broke out the truck’s passenger size window and then broke the steering column, trying to start the truck. Estimated damage is $1,500.
Aug. 20
Shelby Street (theft)
Someone stole tools and equipment from a tent behind Flowers by Regis (2809 Shelby Street) between 9:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20.
Items stolen included a gray Ryobi leaf blower (no cost estimate); a Metal Man welder’s mask, black and red with flames ($85), a 14-inch green and black Poulan chainsaw ($100), a red and black Honda pressure washer ($200), a gray and black Lincoln 125 mig welder ($350) and a black and gray Roto-zip grinder with a black and red bag ($100).
Winberry Street (auto theft): Someone stole a 2002 Gray Dodge Durango from a Winberry Street’s former residence on Stembridge Street. The vehicle was inoperable and parked in the driveway. The victim said the move was recent, on Aug. 17. She said she assumes the suspect had to tow it from the residence.
Aug. 21
Luther Road (auto burglary)
A woman reported on Aug. 21 that someone entered her unsecured truck parked on the street and stole her prescription medication.
Items taken included a bottle of 2mg Xanax tablets ($20) and 20mg Adderall tablets ($20), both of which were in her purse.
Westbrook (burglary)
A victim reported on Aug. 21 that someone stole a large metal toolbox and its tools from a storage building behind her residence.
She estimated the theft occurred between 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and 4:30 p.m. Aug. 21.
The toolbox contained about 75 1-inch drive sockets ($500), a Milwaukee hammer drill ($200), and a tap and die set ($75).
Aug. 22
Shade Tree (vandalism)
A homeowner reported Aug. 22 that someone damaged his gold 1970 Yamaha motorcycle parked on his porch. He left it on his front porch around 11:15 a.m. Aug. 21 and saw found scratches around the ignition when he returned at 11:45 a.m.
He suspected that someone have tried to tamper with the ignition in an attempt to steal the motorcycle. Estimated damages come to $30.
Aug. 23
Prairie View Drive (vandalism)
A woman reported on Aug. 23 that someone had tampered with her car’s license plate and wrote graffiti with a black dry erase marker on her car’s hood without damaging it.
Stage Road (violation of the vehicle registration law)
An officer saw a tan Chrysler Concord headed west on Stage Road at Kirby Whitten and observed the tag had expired in April. The driver could not provide the vehicle’s registration.
The tag decal was issued to a Nissam Maxima. The suspect admitted stealing the decal about two weeks earlier from a vehicle parked at the Mcdonald’s at Raleigh Lagrange and Kirby Whitten.
The officer arrested the driver and took him to the BPD jail for booking and processing. The suspect was found to have knowingly deprived the victim of her property without her effective consent. The suspect was also found to have fraudulently altered his existing license plate and knowingly used it.
