Five Mid-South residents, including one who had to be airlifted, were transported to local hospitals after a dramatic three-car accident in Lakeland Monday morning.
Two cars were travelling eastbound on U.S. 70, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, when a westbound 2005 Dodge Ram failed to maintain its line and struck one of the eastbound cars, a 2005 Honda Pilot.
The Pilot then spun around, and the second vehicle, a 2007 Cadillac CPS, rammed into its driver’s side. Both cars came to a rest in a ditch in front of Lakeland City Hall.
After the Shelby County Fire Department and THP arrived, they helped get victims to medical facilities quickly.
Carol Fenton was trapped inside the Pilot, which was initially hit, then hit again by the CPS.
Upon being freed from the vehicle, she was transported by Wings to Regional One Medical Center. Her two children, who were also in the Pilot, were transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
Fenton is in critical but stable condition. She got out of surgery around 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The driver of the Ram, Walter Ashworth, was cited for failure to maintain lane. He and his family were transported to Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown.
The driver of the Cadillac, Warenett Nixon, was transported to Methodist North Hospital.
