The Rev. Herbert Ene has joined St. Benedict at Auburndale High School (SBA) as a full-time chaplain. He joins Spiritual Affairs Director Hannah Keegan in the school’s Spiritual Affairs Office.
Ene is a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Nigeria. He was ordained in August 1997, having completed his bachelor of philosophy and bachelor of theology degrees in 1992 and 1997. He received his post-graduate diploma in education at the Imo State University Owerri, Nigeria.
He served his home diocese in various capacities: He served as assistant director of Catholic Institute for Development-Justice and Peace (CIDJAP), as pastor of Saint Anthony Catholic Church at Ogui Enugu and as chaplain/pastor of Saint Mulumba Catholic Chaplaincy at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC).
Since his arrival at the Catholic Diocese of Memphis in West Tennessee in 2004, he has served as associate pastor of Holy Cross Church in Paris, Tenn., Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Memphis, and Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Memphis.
He believes in the saying, “Knowledge is power.” His own quest for knowledge led him to Christian Brothers University in Memphis, where he obtained his master’s degree in education and then to the University of Memphis, where he received his doctorate in educational leadership. Before his appointment at St. Benedict, he served in the Diocesan Archives Office.
St. Benedict principal Sondra Morris said, “We are gratified to have Father Ene join our staff and to have a full-time chaplain at our school. He will be administering the sacraments for our students and staff, and his presence solidifies our mission of educating students for this life and beyond. He joins the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, who joined the staff this past school year. … We are grateful to Bishop Steib for his support of SBA and for providing this experience for our students. Catholic education is a diocesan priority, and SBA continues to fulfill that mission at the high school level.”
Ene is an aficionado of soccer, music and tourism. He is known for his friendly greeting, “God is good! All the time!”
