May 7 ceremony to honor officers killed in line of duty

police-firefighter-salutingMEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Memphis will host a tribute May 7 to the law enforcement and firefighting officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

The 10th annual Fallen Heroes Memorial Service will begin at 9:30 a.m.. The ceremony will be held at the Fallen Heroes Monument, just west of the Poplar Avenue entrance to the cemetery.

“Those of us at Memorial Park want this service to renew the respect and appreciation we all should have for those who daily risk their lives for others,” said Greg Griffin, assistant location Manager of Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.

Area mayors, chiefs of police, sheriffs, fire chiefs and other officials are scheduled to attend.

Special tribute will be given to family members representing law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency workers who have given their lives for others since the late 1800s.

Tipton County Sheriff J. T. “Pancho” Chumley will be the keynote speaker, talking about his brother, Lanny Bridges, who was killed on Aug. 14, 1997, in the line of duty as an officer for the Covington Police Department.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Pipes and Drums Corps along with the Wolf River Pipes & Drum Corps will join honor guards from various law enforcement agencies and fire departments.

Helicopters with the Memphis Police Depart-ment, Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Hospital Wing will fly over the cemetery during the event.

The Memphis Police Department Peacemakers will also sing as part of the program.
