3 educators are regional ‘Teachers of the Year’

Three area educators have been chosen as regional Teachers of the Year, school districts have announced.

Regional winners were selected from among all municipal school districts as well as Shelby County Schools. These winners will go on to compete for the state Teacher of the Year recognition in their perspective categories.

Schwann Logan from Elmore Park Middle School has been selected as a regional winner of the Tennessee Teacher of the Year competition, Southwest-Shelby Center Core offices have announced.

She will be honored with a Teacher of the Year banquet on April 9.

Logan, who teaches seventh-grade language arts, was selected by a panel of judges who reviewed all the candidates from the Southwest-Shelby Center of Regional Excellence (CORE) area.

Two of the three regional Teachers of the Year are educators in the Arlington Community Schools district.
Phil Hughes, band director at Arlington High School, was selected as the Regional Teacher of the Year for teachers in grades 9-12.

Tonya Hawkins, fourth-grade teacher at Arlington Elementary School, was selected as the Regional Teacher of the Year for teachers in grades K-4.

Chief of staff Jeff Mayo commented, “This is quite an honor for Arlington Community Schools as well as these educators.”
