Two people have been charged in the case of a newborn’s body found near a chicken restaurant’s dumpster in Bartlett about a year ago.

Kalandra Lacy, 22, gave birth in the bathroom of Gus’s Fried Chicken around the 36th week of her pregnancy. She is charged with abuse of a corpse.

Michael Baines, 23, is charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly trying to help Lacy avoid arrest. He’s also charged with tampering with or fabricating evidence.

The medical examiner’s office couldn’t determine whether the baby was stillborn or born alive, so Lacy and Baines did not face homicide charges.

Lacy is out of jail on $20,000 bond and will appear in Criminal Court Nov. 18. Baines remains in custody on $300,000 bond and will be in General Sessions court on Nov. 4 and Criminal Court on Nov. 18 and Feb. 2.

A passerby found the baby’s body near the dumpster on Oct. 19, 2013.
