The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office handled the following incidents in Arlington during the second half of July. See last week’s issue for Arlington’s earlier July incidents.
Editor’s note: All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and values are estimated for stolen/damaged items. These are brief summaries of detailed SCSO reports.
July 17
Ewe Turn Drive (theft from building)
A woman asked deputies to escort her home July 17 to pick up her belongings after a fight with her live-in boyfriend. The boyfriend returned home while the woman and officers were on site.
He said they argued the previous night and she punched his back and spit in his face several times. There were no witnesses, but the man said he recorded a lot of the argument on his phone.
He also was missing $7,000 in $100 bills he had stored in her brown leather Prada purse on a bedroom shelf. The last time he saw his cash was on July 15 when he added $200 to it. She denied having the money.
Initially she said he didn’t assault her but later said he pushed her right breast three times while he was holding a phone. There was a bruise on her right breast but she couldn’t tell if it happened recently. He said he didn’t assault her.
She got some of her belongings and left while officers were still on the scene. Officers couldn’t determine who was the primary aggressor because of the story conflicts, the time elapsed and the lack of witnesses.
U.S. 70 (misdemeanor shoplifting)
A salesperson at Dollar General (12035 U.S. 70) said a woman with three small children came to the register July 17 with items in her shopping cart but left without buying anything after saying she didn’t have money for the items.
Video surveillance showed the woman handing her children $19.50 worth of items that they took to the car without paying.
The salesperson gave the woman’s name, nickname and location as a resident of the Galloway projects.
July 18
Cashmere Woods Drive (misdemeanor vandalism)
Officers found an unworkable crime scene when they responded to a call on the 11200 block of Cashmere Woods Drive. A woman said her Ford 500 was vandalized while parked outside. The officers saw a mark that ran down almost the entire driver’s side ($400). It wasn’t evident what caused the mark, which was too faint to be felt in the paint and was difficult to see. The victim also had already wiped down her vehicle before officers arrived.
She last saw her vehicle undamaged at 4 p.m. July 12, and she found the damage at 7:40 a.m. July 18.
July 20
Doctor Logan Cove (theft from building)
A woman reported on July 20 that someone stole nearly $2,500 in cash and wardrobe items from her home on the 11800 block of Doctor Logan Cove while she was on vacation. Normally, her elderly mother lives with her, but the older woman was in residential rehab for several weeks.
Items taken included a warm-up suit ($148), three pairs of Converse tennis shoes ($49.95 each), one pair of Michael Kohrs tennis shoes ($119), four pairs of Jessica Simpson sunglasses ($69 each), two Chico’s sundresses ($149 each), two White House/Black House sundresses, ($179), two Michael Kohrs women’s watches ($279), one Michael Kohrs ring ($79), and $500 in loose change.
There were no signs of forced entry, and her home was secure when she left, including having a security alarm set. There were no known witnesses, but the victim suspects her sister and niece because her brother and a neighbor saw the two at the home while she was on vacation.
The victim said her sister had the house keys because their mother asked her to pick some things up.
U.S. 70 (theft from motor vehicle)
A man who parked his cargo van in a side parking lot on the 11900 block of U.S. 70 on July 20 was the victim of a break-in.
He left the Chevrolet Express unattended for about 15 minutes and found the rear driver’s side window shattered when he returned. The only item he noticed missing was a black Craftsman toolbox full of various tools ($400).
The responding officer viewed video footage from the gas station but didn’t see a suspect during the time frame the victim reported. The officer couldn’t lift latent fingerprints because the victim contaminated the scene by opening the varn’s door and moving things around.
Airline Road (simple assault)
An officer responded to the scene of a fight at the Airline Market & Deli around 7:30 p.m. on July 20. The two men said it began because of an old argument regarding Facebook. Each said the other threw the first punch and shoved him, and each had a witness accusing the other party of starting things. Both had small bruises and marks on their faces and necks.
One man had to be detained for safety reasons during the investigation because he wouldn’t quit yelling.
July 24
Airline Road (residential burglary)
A father found his daughter’s back door kicked in on July 24 and checked the home, which is on the 3200 block of Airline Road. A lockbox safe containing $600 and prescription medication were the only items taken. He was checking the home because she was vacationing in Kentucky. The theft occurred between 2 p.m. July 23 and nearly 9 a.m. July 24.
Arlington Fire and two sheriff’s deputies responded to a missing person call at that address on July 23, at which time Arlington Fire made a forced entry. The father said he believes the suspect returned to the property after the first responders left the scene.
July 26
Rosebrook Lane (theft from motor vehicle)
A woman reporting an SUV burglary on July 26 said she might have left the vehicle unlocked.
The woman, a resident on the 11900 block of Rosebrook Lane, said she last saw her vehicle and belongings intact around 9 p.m. on July 25 and discovered the theft shortly after 6 a.m. the next morning. Someone had ransacked the 2013 Mercedes Benz ML350 and dumped items originally in the SUV (clothing, a towel and a toiletry bag) on the sidewalk in front of her house. Nothing appeared to be missing.
The responding deputy pulled a latent fingerprint from the driver’s side door at the crime scene. It was one of 10 vehicles someone rummaged through that night in Arlington.
Rosebrook Lane (theft from motor vehicle)
While responding to another call on the 11900 block of Rosebrook Lane, a deputy saw two car doors ajar on the same block around 6 a.m. Both vehicles, a Honda Odyssey and a Chevrolet Avalanche had open glove compartments and center consoles, and they appeared to have been ransacked.
The owner said both were left unlocked overnight. The only items missing were a handgun and loaded magazine from the Avalanche. The gun’s information was placed in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.
At 7:23 a.m., deputies learned that the Oakland Police Department had recovered the gun during a traffic stop and detained one suspect.
Woodcastle Cove (theft from motor vehicle)
A man on the 12000 block of Woodcastle Cove found both doors open on his Chevrolet Camaro and the driver’s side door open on his Chevrolet Suburban the morning of July 26. Both had been left unlocked overnight.
The only theft was of the keys left in the Suburban’s ignition. A deputy was able to lift prints from the Camaro.
Rosebrook Lane (theft from motor vehicle)
A woman who left her vehicle unlocked overnight on the 12000 block of Rosebrook Lane found it in disarray the morning of July 26. Someone had rummaged through it and left items scattered over both front seats. She didn’t notice that anything was stolen.
The responding deputy wasn’t able to lift any fingerprints because the crime scene had been contaminated.
Cranston Cove (theft from motor vehicle)
Two vehicles were crime scenes on the 11900 block of Cranston Cove the morning of July 26.
A father said someone took his Smith & Wesson semiautomatic gun ($450) and Swiss bag ($20) from his unlocked Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. He wasn’t able to provide the serial number. His son said a Swiss backpack ($70) was taken from the backseat of his Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The deputy wasn’t able to lift fingerprints from the scene because the complainants had contaminated the crime scene.
A neighbor has surveillance cameras but was not home at the time of the report.
Jackson Street (theft from motor vehicle)
The owner of a Toyota 4Runner found his driver’s side door open but nothing stolen the morning of July 26. He said he left the vehicle unlocked the previous night at his home on the 6000 block of Jackson Street. The deputy couldn’t lift any fingerprints because the victim had touched the outside and inside of the vehicle.
Preserve Woods Lane (theft from motor vehicle)
A woman who left her Nissan Frontier unlocked in her driveway on the 12100 block of Preserve Woods Lane was the victim of theft. She reported around 2:30 p.m. July 26 that someone stole an unspecified amount of cash from the center console.
The responding deputy was unable to retrieve any latent fingerprints.
July 27
Memphis Arlington Road (counterfeiting/forgery)
A woman whose vehicle was burglarized on June 1 learned that two business checks must have been in the vehicle then. On July 27, she reported that someone cashed those two checks on July 21 and 23.
Someone signed the checks with the name of the business, but she said the business has never endorsed a check in that manner. She provided the deputy with the two names someone used to cash the checks.
Longhorn Drive (intimidation)
A woman on the 12200 block of Longhorn Drive reported threats again from her husband’s ex-wife on July 27.
The ex reportedly said she had a gun and would kill the woman. She also said she hopes she loses custody of her children, who she claims are abused.
July 29
Joshua Oak Drive (residential burglary)
A woman who lives on the 11500 block of Joshua Oak Drive was the victim of road rage and damaged property on July 28.
She was traveling northbound on Airline Road around 10:40 p.m. and about to turn westbound on Milton Wilson Drive. She almost hit another vehicle that was also turning westbound. The other driver yelled at her to “Use your f______ blinkers! I’m going to f______ follow you!”
When she pulled into her garage, she saw the other driver pass by and drive south on Melanie Creek Cove. She closed the garage door and went inside her home.
About 30 minutes later, she heard a loud pop and hissing sounds. She looked outside the garage door that leads into the residence and saw the other driver exiting the garage door that leads to the outside.
She and another family member took shelter in a room and called another person. This other person called 911 and rushed to the home. When he arrived, he saw that someone had slashed the front driver’s side tire ($300) of the woman’s Jeep Cherokee.
A crime scene tech arrived, took photos and lifted fingerprints. The two victims who locked themselves away for safety’s sake said they feared for their lives.
Jon Oak Drive (theft from motor vehicle)
A man found his GM Sierra’s front passenger window shattered and multiple items stolen the morning of July 29.
Items taken included an Apple iPhone ($750), Apple iPad ($750), gold ring ($450), $4,000 in cash and various prescription drugs ($1,100). The deputy took photos of the crime scene but wasn’t able to lift any latent fingerprints
The theft happened between 5 p.m. July 28 and 4 a.m. July 29 on the 5000 block of Jon Oak Drive.
